Series Review: Fun Fact File: Fierce Fish!
“The Fun Fact File: Fierce Fish! series may be hard to say but it’s easy to read and pitched just right for reluctant readers. Essentially, it’s a randomly arranged, numbered list beefed up with additional facts, an arrangement ideal for browsers. The one-fact-per-page formula keeps things brisk—a table breaking down the various names, locations, and sizes of each fish serves as an intermission—and every spread is enlivened by underwater photos and fun-fact captions … Basic but snappy, these are good pit stops for first-time report writers.”

Series Review: Strange Life Cycles
“These books deserve attention for far more than their sensational titles. Clearly written, they are bursting with information and intriguing, full-page color photos that enhance understanding of some of nature’s most unusual creatures. New vocabulary is introduced on nearly every page and is always well defined in context or in the glossary … sidebars, life-cycle diagrams, ‘Fun Facts’ pages, charts, and back matter exemplify nonfiction features at their finest. The graphics are as appealing as the content: simple, eye-catching, and bright. Great for research or independent reading, this series may well turn students into budding biologists.”

Series Review: You Can Draw
“Attracted by the colorful covers, artistic machine enthusiasts will not be disappointed by the contents of these how-to-draw volumes … Kids are encouraged to try drawing their vehicles from various angles, and to add details and decoration. These projects are simple enough to be accessible, but complex enough to look cool.”

Series Review: Measure Up Math
“This well-written series is thorough in providing details … The problems containing conversion calculations–a necessary skill for students–are especially helpful. Readers will enjoy the fun facts that help them visualize measurements, such as ‘330 children, standing on top of one another, would reach the top of the Empire State Building!’”

Series Review: Big-Buck Business
“The timely and topical books explain the ins and outs, history, and future of different areas of commerce and highlight successful people in the various fields … The set will be helpful for further research, for learning about an industry as a whole, and/or as an introduction to a study of economics.”

Book Review: Skin Deep: The Business of Beauty
“Beauty is a huge business, so this title fits neatly into the Big-Buck Business series. The slim, glossy volume does offer a lot of information … The photos … are bold, crisp, and glam, and invite readers in.”

Series Review: The Great Outdoors
“The Great Outdoors set is a fantastic introduction to many popular outdoor activities, with titles about Rock Climbing, Camping, Hunting, Fishing, Caving, and Kayaking/Rafting. Each title in the series features attractive photos, a glossary of terms, tips, informative captions, and factoids. Do you want to learn how to do an ‘Eskimo roll’ in a kayak? Learn the history of the s’mores recipe? Debate the pros and cons of hunting? See what a mineral formation known as a ‘gypsum flower’ looks like? Learn which lure or bait to use for different fish? It’s all here in this series.”

Series Review: Nature’s Light Show
“Rajczak directs readers’ eyes skyward to observe a variety of phenomena … the variations in layout and inclusion of informative fact boxes and captions make these volumes solid introductions. Clear, well-labeled diagrams help explain topics such as refraction of light through a prism and orbits of comets. Step-by-step reviews of how lightning, rainbows, and auroras form conclude the volumes on those topics, reinforcing what students have just read.”

Series Review: A Graphic History of the Civil Rights Movement
“Focusing on action and drama, these titles highlight the lives of Civil Rights heroes. The author makes effective use of the graphic-novel format … The texts of the comic-style sections are easy to follow … these titles offer an exciting look at important history in an appealing format.”
