For hundreds of years, artists have designed theoretical helicopters, but it was not until the 1940s that the dream of an aircraft that could hover and move vertically rose up from the drawing board into the real world. This book looks at the aerodynamics of helicopters and some of the latest models, and is fully loaded with fun features such as sidebars, fact boxes, and cool cutaways.

Series Review: How Does It Work? The 13 two-page chapters in each book are attractively designed. The first spread shows the featured vehicle on a bright yellow background. Numerous parts of the cutaway illustrations are labeled with one-sentence explanations of the indicated parts function. The rest of each title is nicely arranged with black font on a bright blue background. Photos and captions, diagrams, Fun Facts, Thats Amazing! boxes, and one experiment add a considerable amount of information to the text.School Library Journal
