The Holocaust was genocide of devastating proportions, perpetrated by the German government during World War II. During this time, millions of Jews were imprisoned or killed along with gypsies, the disabled, Communists, Socialists, and others. The atrocities committed during the Holocaust were, up to that time, unfathomable, and it's difficult to read about them without being stupefied by the facts. This book examines the Holocaust using well-researched information supplemented by primary sources from the time period, sidebars, and timelines.

Series Review: Moments in HistoryThis series explains the before, during, and after of seminal events of the 20th century in a clear, unbiased manner. The authors walk the fine line between certainty and moral ambiguity, knowing when to pass judgment and when to leave topics open for debate...Though there is no shortage of books on these topics, the combination of information and readability makes these titles good choices.School Library JournalSeries Review: Moments in HistoryBrightly colored pullout boxes highlight important turning points, the perspective of the everyday man, and further information on why specific events occurred. Numerous photographs help readers visualize concepts more fully. Each work includes photographs, maps, a timeline, glossary, and further information with books and websites.Library Media ConnectionBook Review: Why Did the Holocaust Happen? Each chapter is well-organized... Wealth of archival photographs are well chosen and reflect the somberness of the subject. Sound information and an attractive format and layout make this a recommended resource for middle school readers as well as for reluctant readers at the beginning high school level.K. McIntire, School Librarian, The Selwyn School
